The airfields themselves are listed in alphabetical order for easy reference, with details of when they opened, which squadrons and aircraft flew from them, significant operations anda host of incidents - crashes, air raids and the like - which bring their histories to vivid life.
Michael Bowyer, founder and series editor of the Action Stations books (which will run to ten volumes), is a retired Cambridge schoolmaster.
