Readers of this book will inevitably play the
game of choosing the best-ever boxer. Was it
old-timer Jem Mace, the "Father of Modern
Boxing"? Was it Jack Johnson, the negro
champion so hated in his day that there was a
world-wide search for a 'white hope' to beat
him? Was it Bob Fitzsimmons, the last British
heavyweight world champion, or Henry
Armstrong, both of whom won world titles at
three weights? Was it Gene Tunney, who retired
as undefeated champion, or Rocky Marciano, who
won all his professional fights? Many would
plump for Joe Louis. How would he have fared
against Muhammad Ali? Sugar Ray Robinson has
been called the greatest pound-for-pound fighter
of all time, but what of the very small men,
featherweight 'Peerless' Jim Driscoll, or Jimmy
Wilde, the greatest flyweight of all time?
One thing is certain. There can be few writers
better qualified to recount the lives of the great
champions than Gilbert Odd, who in fifty years as
a boxing journalist has come to know the Fight
Game inside out, has seen the fights and has
known the boxers, the hangers-on, and the
officials, and who has been lucky enough to claim
many of the all-time greats as his friends.
