This volume is a facsimile reprint of the 1919
edition of Jane's All The World's Aircraft. It
is complete in all its original detail, including
the advertisements.
This edition of Jane is radically different
from that of 1913 Jane's All The World's
Aircraft already reprinted in this series. By
1919 the aeroplane had behind it a substan-
tial history of use in warfare, while its peace-
time exploitation in commerce was being
actively planned. The number of types of
aircraft, of aero machines and other parts had
multiplied rapidly, and the increase is reflected
in the size of this volume which runs to over
800 pages including the advertisements which
are almost as telling as the text itself. Mean-
while, though still under development, the
airship was of declining importance and
accounts for only the last section of thirty-six
pages. It was, however, still possible to look
forward to the increasing use of airships for
luxury travel: various British 'R' airships are
illustrated and described.
David Et Charles have a substantial programme to
make available basic source material in convenient
and handsome form at a reasonable price.
This is one of a number of Jane's reprints. The
programme includes the 1898, 1906-7, 1914 and
1919 editions of Jane's Fighting Ships (called
Jane's All the World's Fighting Ships for the first
edition in 1898), and the 1909, 1913 and 1919
editions of Jane's All the World's Aircraft (called
Jane's All the World's Airships for the first edition
in 1909).
Other substantial reprint ventures include that
of representative issues of Bradshaw's Railway
Guides; of the famous series produced at the
time of the Napoleonic Wars, General View of the
Agriculture of the County of Devon, . .. Lancaster,
. Norfolk, etc, which deals with travel, industry
and social conditions as well as agriculture;
White's and Baines's county directories and
gazetteers; and the first edition of the one-inch
Ordnance Survey of England and Wales in 97
sheets each with cartographic notes by Dr Brian
Harley.
