NORTH DAKOTA HISTORIC MARKERS

North Dakota has experienced a rich and varied past from its geologic
beginnings which shaped the land, through the long period of human
occupation by its native peoples and finally the recorded and unrecorded
history following the coming of the white man. Efforts by North Dakota
people to preserve this past are as old as the state itself. An outstanding
record of acquiring historic sites, documents and artifacts has been made.
In many respects, however, development of these resources and
presenting the story of North Dakota to the public has been slow. In recent
years a renewed interest in-our heritage and a realization of the importance
of knowing more about our origins is stimulating a level of funding for
historical projects closer to need. Several major restoration and
developmental projects are now underway. Legislation has just passed the
current legislative session which will allow the State Historical Society to
mark sites listed on a State Historic Sites Registry. Previously only sites
administered by the Society have been marked by the agency. Legislation
to fund construction of a North Dakota Heritage Center building to house
the programs of the State Historical Society is presently being considered.
This project has met with a great deal of statewide enthusiasm. An oral
history project initiated by the North Dakota Bicentennial Commission and
funded for one year by the North Dakota Farmers Union is being
considered for State funding to complete the project in the next two years.
Throughout the state, individuals and organizations are involved in state
and local efforts for the preservation and interpretation of history.
A book such as this has also been a long time coming even though the
need has been recognized for some time. It should prove to be of
considerable assistance to those wishing to study North Dakota history on
location where the events took place. At the encouraging pace historical
developments are now happening, the second edition should be a greatly
expanded version.
